Jeff,

When I bought my '71 Ambassador, it had carb problems similar to the ones
you describe.
Upon disassembling them, I found that most of the little O-rings were either
missing or rotted and leaking. I also had a leaky float on one side. I
bought the rebuild kits and float from MG Cyclehttp://www.mgcycle.com/and
after reassembley and some tweaking, I got the bike running properly again.
I drilled and tapped the aluminum intake manifolds to accept my mercury
sticks for synching the carbs but if you have a good ear and some experience
with a good running Guzzi, you can do it by ear and be fairly close.

Here's two mistakes I've seen on reassembley of the Del Orto carbs:

1. The slides will go in either way, but if you have them in backwards, it
will be readily apparent.
(I'm guilty of this blunder myself)

2. The idle jets and main jets look the same at first glance and are the
same thread and will go in either hole but if you get them in the wrong one,
it will also be readily apparent. Make sure you keep track of the parts and
mark them for reassembley if you've never done it before. I use a muffin
tin to keep the parts in when I take a carb apart. A fine point Sharpie pen
also comes in handy.

If you don't have an exploded parts diagram of the carbs, let me know and I
will scan it for you and post it to my web page.

Cheers,

Dave
