How bad is the chrome?

The tank on mine had a mild case of previousowneritis. the tank had been
ground witha wire wheel and repainted. but the chrome was in pretty good
shape. My buddy taped off the chrome with duct tape and sand blasted the
tank. then I used paint stripper to get the little bits of paint off the
edge of the chrome. (he overlapped by about 1/2") Then I taped ff the panel
in the shape that I wanted And I painted it.

If the chrome just had some pin holes, I might polish the chrome to get rid
of the rust spots and then give a couple coates of rattle can clear. This
will keep the rust from reappearing. I think. I did this with the gas cap on
mine. We'll see how it goes.

The chrome does serve a purpose in that it is much more durable than the
paint and it won't get messed up with your kneed rubbing on it.

SO try polishing the chrome to see if it is do-able. If so, have the painter
do the color and clear coat and then maybe unmask the chrome for the final
clear coat to preserve the chrome.

Just a thought.

Fellow loopers, (kinda sounds like a disease)
I have decided that my 28 year old, 149,000 mile eldo is going to need a
good clean up. I would really like to repaint it and re-chrome the tank
panels but I know that it will be an impossibility from a affordability
standpoint. To me the chrome tank panels are one of the most defining
features on a loopframe, but the prices that I have been quoted are
waaaaaaaay out of my price range so I must decide to paint the tank and
fenders a solid color or leave them as is, which is a bit repugnant after
seeing some beautifully restored loopframe bikes. My questions are, what are
the purposes, other than looks, for the chromed tank panels? And, should one
paint the tank a solid color or not, and if not, then why? The last option
is, should I leave it be and allow it's weathered look to be considered
character?
