Hello all,
Unfortunately on my '69 Ambo I don't really have a choice. The tank has
been replaced with a later Ambo one (instead of the small V700 style
that was fitted originally) and all the chrome was removed before it was
painted by the OO (original owner). One of these days I'll get around to
posting some pictures of it. The way it's painted though is quite
attractive to me. The tank is white with a black band starting at the
top front and swooping down the side to the areas that were originally
chrome. The black area is outlined in red pinstriping. If you're coming
to the W.NY Rally or WV it'll be there. I do have the original tank as
well, but the chrome is badly pitted on one side. My intention with the
'69 is to put it back close as possible to stock when funding (and time)
allows. Two years ago Cycle Colors in Fayetteville, NC(?) quoted me $450
to do the tank completely - strip, rechrome, repaint and pinstripe if I
supplied the decals. Very high quality work judging from the examples on
display. I'm sure the price has changed by now, though.

On Ambo #2 the chrome is also quite bad, so I plan to paint the entire
tank '85 Audi 4000 Quattro blue and use (European model) 850GT decals on
it. Or maybe 750 Special decals and paint the chrome areas silver - I
can't make up my mind!

In any case, as already stated, the important thing is to keep these old
dinosaurs on the road be it with concours quality restorations or rattle
can garage paint jobs! Cheers,

Charlie
