Hi All,
I have two Ambos...a 69 and a 70. The 70 has about 500 miles on the new
engine.
The valve clatter on the 70 is a bit louder than on the 69 (with 30k on the
engine). When I measured the valve clearances the 70 is loose on the feeler
guage (I set intake 6 and exhaust 10). What I mean by that is that the
feeler guage makes contact but slides easily. On the 69 the feeler is a bit
tighter.
I'm not sure but do you think that the little differences noted would make
the difference in the clatter?
By the way...both bikes run tops.
Regards...Ian

Hi Greg,
I don't hear much sound from my timing gears (I believe they are helical
but plenty of whining from the transmission when in 4th. The valves on myold
'69 Ambo are barely noticeable at speed (with a full-faced helmet andon
windshield), but a customer's Eldo I just finished doing a top-end rebuild
has quite a bit more noise. In his case the original rockers are worn wherebushings.
they contact the valve and the used set I put in have slightly worn
Most Loopframes that haven't been rebuilt or otherwise "fettled" have alittle
more noise than the "T" and later bikes. In other words "these motors arethan
typically ticky". Better to hear the valves and know they have clearance,
to not hear them and burn a valve due to being too tight. Have fun! Cheers,
Charlie
