Pete,

In the original throttle assembly there is a chain that wraps part way
around the throttle. At the end of the chain is a slot where the cable end
fits in. I think they did it this way because the links in the chain bent
better as the throttle was turned as compared to a cable.

Did that make sense?

Sorry guys, I have been reading about chains on the throttle cable. I
never
 saw any chains in my throttle linkage. can somebody explain a little?
