Cool! Learn something new everyday. Saw the difference in the pix on
cyclegarden.com. Never realized there was a difference until you and
Ian talked about it. Knew about the engine casting difference but never
had heard about the rear drive difference.

Thanx for the info. How's your starter situation?

Keith, Look at your casting. It has fins in a kind of star pattern
around the casting. The newer ones are smooth, cleaner looking maybe,
but
not as interesting. Find an Eldorado picture.

What is the difference in the rear drive unit between the Ambo and
Eldo?

Dead on as usual Ian. Before I bought my Ambassador I only
wanted an
Eldorado. But in the year of looking I had found that the
Ambassador
appealed to me more in its own little ways. As stated the rear
drive
unit is
a thing of beauty compared to the newer one and the single speedo
with
the
simple polished housing has its own understated elegance. Sure it
would
be
nice to have a fresh balanced, blueprinted 1000 cc lump in it but
somehow it
doesn't matter when your pulling 70 down your favorite road and
the
exhaust
is singing and the engine is in one of it's 'sweet' spots. Gotta
like
it!

Paul,

You would be surprised how well these bikes run if properly
tuned.
Seems
that when they get up into the higher rpms they take on a
life of
their own.
The thumping two cylinder turns into a sweet humming
machine. Hard
to
explain......you will just have to see for yourself :-)

I use to think that the Eldo was the better bike with bigger
engine
and 5
speed. Also...I thought that they were more collectible.
Truth is
that the
Ambos have some nice characteristics that were lost in the
Eldo. The
rear
drive unit is a thing of beauty compared with the Eldos.
Also...the
single
speedo nacelle on the earlier models really give the bike a
nice
look as
compared to the two instrument cluster.

Regards...Ian
