Are you sure your timing is set properly?

Inspiring words! Got excited. Got started at 8:05 this evening. Already

had the carb cleaner.

 
2)Pull the float bowls, the idle mixture screws, and the main jet
holder/accelerator pump body-this is the brass assembly that the
main jet screws into; also what the bowl retaining nut threads
onto. Be watching for the atomizer to fall out as you withdraw the >
pump body .

Did that. Worked slow so no little parts would zing across the shop.
20 minutes. It's 8:25.

 3) Spray & wipe out the swarf from the bowls. Spray into the idle > mix
screw hole using the straw that comes with the can of carb
cleaner. Look for spray coming out of the idle jet, which is
adjacent to the main jet holder/accelerator pump inside the float
bowl. An air blast would be nice, but not required.

Did that. Float bowl was clean and shiny on the bottom, no swarf, no
deposits. Main jet and pilot jet were clear, nothing buggered up, nice
and clean. 10 minutes. 8:35

 4)Disassemble & clean the accelerator pump as follows; remove main >jet,

unscrew jet holder (there is a spring under there). Remove the >spring &

the pump piston. The piston has a check ball inside-wrap >the piston in
something (I used a rubber glove recently for >gription) and secure
lightly in a vice/clamp, then disassemble the >pump- careful, the check
ball is small! Clean it all up with the >spray & reassmble.

Did that. Everything was nice and clean before I even started, but
disassembled and cleaned anyway just to see what was in there. 10
minutes. 8:45.
 
5) Check the jet sizes. Can't help you with numbers-perhaps others
could.

Jet sizes were as per Guzziology - 145 mains, 45 idle jets, stock
cutaway, needle in middle slot. In deference to the fact that there are

open pipes and K&Ns on it, I "upped" the needle one notch for a richer
midrange. 15 minutes. 9:00.

 6) Put it all back together & give it a try. Might want to smear a
little oil on the choke jet o-ring, the little one that plugs into > the

bottom of the float bowl-you'll know what I mean when you see > it.

Did it. No leaks. 5 minutes. 9:05. One hour for the first carb.

Second carb, identical. 15 minutes for the whole thing now that I know
what's there. 9:20

Fire it back up. Runs EXACTLY like it did before I started. Pilot
screws each out 1.5 turns, slides lifting at the same time. Starts
right up on the chokes, idles great till it warms up, then starts
running real rich on choke. Ease choke off, starts popping, spitting,
and backfiring, won't idle, won't accelerate. Give it a little choke,
it'll run and idle but puffs black smoke and gets the plugs black. No
change with K&Ns on or off the bike.

10:00. Come into house and commiserate on keyboard to the astonishingly

patient and knowledgable Loopframe List.
