Hi, all. Since I posted to both of these lists
regarding my Convert fork tube dilemma, I thought it
would be appropriate to post a follow-up. I was able
to negotiate with the vender to the point where he
agreed that if I would return the fork tubes to him at
my own expense he and if he finds them to be of
unacceptable quality he would ship me replacement
tubes at no additional cost. This is not, in my
opinion, an ideal solution, since it involves me
paying additional money to return tubes that should
never have been shipped in the first place, and also
the risk of him claiming that the tubes are fine and
refusing to send me anything at all. The man was very
reluctant to grant me even this satisfaction. He
outright refused to refund my money. However, he
didn't seem like a cheat, really, so I decided to
trust him. I sent him the tubes, then in a few days I
called him (he didn't call me). He said (angrily) that
all Guzzi tubes look like that after a few hundred
miles, and that they wold work just fine. However, he
seemed tired of dealing with me, and after I
reluctantly threatened to have my credit card issuer
charge him back for delivering damaged goods he said
he would send me a refund. The check came, I deposited
it (with prayer), and it cleared.

I took the $90 from the refund and bought a used set
of tubes from the mechanic at the Spare Parts Co in
Philly. He was parting out a CX100. The bike has
70,000 miles on it, but the tubes are in much better
condition then the ones I returned - so I guess he was
wrong about all Guzzi tubes losing their chrome after
a few hundred miles.

Now I have a bit of a dilemma. I don't know whether
this guy is a bad egg, or just an ornery old bugger
that can sometimes be trusted. His adds claim that he
has a lot of parts for the older v-twin guzzis -
loops, Converts, etc. I'm sure I would like to avail
myself of his parts in the future, but I feel a strong
inner hesitation. Especially since he is half a
continent away, so that I cannot go speak to him
face-to-face.

Safe riding to you all!
