I need to follow up Ian's questions with one of my own. My eldo is
exhibiting some odd behaviour and I solicit your collective advice.

Sometimes- not all the time, not necessarily when hot or cold but just
random sometimes, when I let the clutch out, starting off, the whole
drive system shudders/chatters like either a clutch plate is slamming
back and forth or the transmission gears are slamming into each other.
Or like the clutch slips/grabs/slips/grabs. The tranny makes a nasty
racket, the bike shudders forward and I just dump the clutch to make it
go. It only happens in first gear, and only if starting from a dead
stop.
Most times the bike pulls away smoothly. Then just occasionally it does
this jumping gear thing. All other gears shift smooth, the clutch
action is smooth and about the right pull. I did not see evidence of
metal in the transmission oil last time I changed it (I'll check again,
though). Needless to say, I do not find this endearing. Before I start
to tear the bike apart or do any real damage, does anyone have any
suggestions?

Thanks,
Jason
