Hello, all. This time I have some more questions related to my Eldo
rebuild, this time on wheel rebuilding.
I have a '74 disk brake Eldo, and I am in the middle of disassembling
the front wheel. Before disassembly, I measured the offset of the hub on
each side of the wheel (with respect to the outside edge of the rim) and
found that the right side is offset 6.3 mm (+/- 0.1 mm), while the left
side of the rim is offset 7.6 mm (+/- 0.2 mm). I thought that this was
peculiar (that the right side of the hub is on average 1.3 mm closer to
the outside edge of the rim than the other side) in view of the fact
that installing a disk on the LHS is a common option. I am considering
installing a second disk, and my question is this: should I assemble the
hub exactly in the middle (same offset both sides), or should I put it
back together the way it was?
My second question is about the spoke nipples, which are made of
bronze or brass, but have a silver finish on them. What is that finish?
Is it nickel, or what, and where can I take them to be refinished (a
chrome plater, maybe)?
And lastly, does anyone know a good way of getting out spokes which
are stuck in the hub (due to oxidation of the hub)? I have been using
penetrating oil, a propane torch, and a hammer (striking a nipple
screwed on the end of the spoke). This works, but takes a lot of
patience, and results in more time straightening bent spokes.
Any help is much appreciated.
