I rode to the National last year (about 1500 miles) with the left one lose
enough to wiggle with my hand. No header to frame clamps either. The nut
never lossened any further and I didn't have any problems with blow by at
the header port or vibration. I guess the gasket goo I put in there did the
trick.

They are tight now though :-)....Ian

well here is another story - when i flopped the bike in the arctic this last
summer - My valve head threads for the carburetor were elongated( they were
starting when I left NY - but the fall exacerbated the situation) - the carb
was lose - gravity pulling it down - no repair was able to endure - jb weld ,
mechanic wire - etc
when the bike was standing or idle - the carb was looking down at an angle -
at 20mph - the carb was sucked into a normal position - rode it home that way
for 6,000 miles - I have to get a new valve head - the threads are not
repairable

ok - its not a loopframe ( german boxer ) but it is similiar experience
richard

PS - the bike is put away pending complete restoration- I have not openend up
yet to see how much damage internally( if any) there was from dirt
