Chris:

If it's got aluminum sliders, it should have dampers. If it has the
old steel sliders with the chrome trim on top, they're undamped.

I wonder if thats why my 1974 model with the disc brake bottoms out
easily and clanks at full extension on the front end? I've noticed
this since I bought it, and figured the damper cartriges were
shot...now I wonder if they're even there at all and I have the
old-school front suspension?

It gets worse: There may even have been some 1974 models with the old
undamped forks with a disc brake. I have a 1974 parts catalog that
shows one, all decked out in police gear. Of course, it may just have
been a factory mock-up, but maybe not.
