Hi Tom,
There should be a grommet in the hole, the speedometer cable goes through
it. At the bottom of the covers there are "L" shaped, round, wire prongs
that fit into grommets on the battery tray. At the top there are "thumb
screws" (long bolts with a knob on the end) that screw into a tab on the
frame. The thumb screws for the early style battery covers have a longer
6mm portion than the ones for the later style. The early style thumb
screws are part no. 1270 6600 and the later are 1370 6600 from what I can
ascertain. Both are available either NOS or as reproductions from MG
Cycle, Moto Guzzi Classics, Moto International (and in stainless steel
from Joe Kenney). Cheers,

I have a 1969 V7.....and it has the early style side covers. The side
cover on the right goes over the speedometer cable and has a small cut
away for the cable. At the top front corner of that same side cover
there is a machined hole also. It is about 10mm in diameter. What is
this for?
Also how were these cover originally held in place and are those
pieces available?
