this is what i do:

1. clean cases in petrol (gas to you)
2. use propietory degreaser (gunk/jizer in the uk)
3. clean several times with really strong solution of washing powder or
dishwasher powder & very hot water.
4. using small pick, pick off all stubbon bits that haven't been removed
yet. wash again.
5. repeat stages 2,3, & 4 as required.

i know this sounds like a pain, but i don't think it actually takes any
longer than the time taken to be REALLY sure that ALL blast media has been
removed after bead blasting. finish is 95% as good as blasting & you won't
seize your motor.
i would not use blasting inside an engine unless i had access to an
industrial steam cleaner. I do, & still do it the "hard way"

i might get the cylinders blasted though.

just re-read your post. you don't seem to be dismantling engine, so blasting
not really an option anyhow.

there are firms in the uk that will mask all orifices of an assembled engine
& blast it whole. to which my reaction is: no 'kin way!

Subject: Cleaning finish on engine and cylinders/fins

Well now that I have my engine and trans out of my Ambo due to the trans
not being able to be shifted I want to clean the engine, fins and
cylinders and get all oxidation stains off and get a uniform finish on
the rough aluminum surfaces/cases and fins. I did try and look on the
topica archives but it told me there are no messages on the loopframe
archives.

Any suggestions on best way to proceed?

On the problem with the trans I picked-up another tranny to use in place
of the bad one. It seems to shift well and all gears and neutral could
be found without difficulty. Along with the tranny I picked-up another
Ambo that is all together and running although a little on the ratty
side which is fine with me. This way I can ride in the meantime while I
work on the disassembled one and really don't have to worry about the
cosmetics on the driver.
