I know the books say to drop the jugs over the pistons as they are attached to the crank. They also said that the cylinders have a taper at the bottom to compress the rings.
But I did it they way I learned with car engines.
I dropped the piston and con rod through the cylinder with the aid of a normal ring compressor, and carefully guided con rod through cyl and onto crank without knicking anything.(Used rubber fuel hose to cover con-rod bolts and to hold the rod away from the cyl walls and around crank journal. Then torqued the con rods onto the crank and put on oil pan, then put heads on.
