Finally got the Eldo out for its first significant test
run after repairing/shimming the transmission, rebuilding
the carbs, cables, alternator conversion (Greg - I just
couldn't wait for the replacement :-/) and a variety of
other externals. Took it out for a 15 mile run - shifts
beautifully! I'm stunned, its better than my 2004 EV. I
never missed a gear, no false neutrals, and I couldn't
feel any crunching or notchiness between gears - can't say
that about the EV - shifting that it is a workout by
comparison.

It does share one idiosynchrasy with the EV. Downshifting
into first from neutral at a stop - sometimes I have to
hold the shift lever down and release the clutch just a
bit before they "clunk" into first. Doesn't seem to hurt
anything - seems to be a "character" issue - but I'm
curious about what causes this?

Thanks to everyone who provided advice, this is a great
list. Off to buy a new battery, the 275 CA battery I
liberated from the John Deere just ain't gettin' it done.
Oh, and it was fun outrunning the new HD that was
following me "just in case" :) -tom
