Hi Paul,

I think you are referring to this boss, correct?

Looking at a picture at the bell housing of an early v700 (from the
workshop manual), it appear that it would connect with the passageway
that goes up to the breather inlet tube?

On a related note, I called Gordon up yesterday and chatted with him
about the sump extender they offer
(http://www.mgcycle.com/externals.html). Gordon had an Eldo block
available, and was able to confirm - to a *fairly high probability but
not absolute certainty* - that the extender would fit without
modification. In addition to the sump extender, it seems that gaskets
and a bunch of longer bolts would be easily obtainable. The only
fabrication required would be to extend the oil pick-up tube the extra
31 mm that the sump extends. If I were to do this, I think I would also
create a deeper (wider) screen and related parts so that big stuff
wouldn't ever be sucked into the pump.

But, I like the idea of adding an oil filter even better. Hmmm...lot's
of decisions to be made before hurricane season rolls around and I have
lot's of time to work in the garage (rather than escape with the fleeing
multitudes) :>

Talking about all this sump stuff got me to wondering about the boss on
the
right side of the Eldo case. Is there any real reason it was put there?
If
it was drilled out it would go directly to the rear main. Can it
actually be
used for perhaps an external filter system? These blocks have a number
of
blanked off points that I guess were plans for future use but just never
made it into production. Anyone know anything more about them?

Paul

It's a sump extender that also includes provision for an oil filter,
mounted outside, at the back of the sump extender. It filters oil only
to the rear main and rear cam bearing, but that's better than no filter
at all.
