I know from the financial reports is the major oil companies are reporting
record profits and have just been given huge billion dollar subsidies in
the new energy bill. Texaco/Chevron and BP/Amoco have both just shut down
their 2 major refineries for general maintenance. Seems strange they pick a
time to do this when oil is over 60 dollars a barrel. Looks like price
fixing to me. Hold back the supply and watch the price go up. Another
factor is all the drill rigs in the gulf have to shut down every time a
storm comes in, so the lose production.

Hurricane Dennis Damaged one of the largest oil platforms in existence, BP's
Thunder Horse. After the storm the platform was listing at a 45 degree
angle.

With more large storms being the norm, this will probably be a common issue.

On a side note, I ran into a guy a few months back on evo sportster at a
local bike night. He had a small mustang fuel tank, but there was no gas
cap or fuel lines. He had a sleeping bag rolled up on the rear fender.
Hidden in the sleeping bag was what looked like a scuba tank. He had
converted the bike to run off propane. He got the parts from a old fork
lift. He said it was easy to do and the bike actually runs better and
cooler on propane than on gas. where there is a will there is a way.

Last month in England, the first time I topped off the tank on the BSA I
was riding, my credit card got whacked for $43.00. Gas is $8.50 a
gallon there (actually about 90p per liter).

It's interesting to ask people (when they talk about gas prices being so
high) "Well, what SHOULD the price of a gallon of gas be?"

Nobody knows the answer to that question. What's the cost of production
at the wells? What's the cost of refining and storage? What's the cost
of distribution and retailing? What's the cost of environmental
remediation?

Maybe the REAL cost of gasoline is $9.00 a gallon and we're just getting
a huge temporary bargain. I don't know and I'd like to hear from
someone who thinks they do. There's more to it than "Big Oil is just
ripping us off." How do we know they're not giving us a great deal and
if we exposed it, the price would triple?
