the key is to always have the #1 jug at TDC as a reference point.

What you do is take a cylinder, say the left cylinder (2??) this cylinder fires from the outermost plugwire from the distributor so make sure the piston is at TDC of its compression stroke (right about the time the spark plug should fire) and put the distributor in so that the tip of the rotor is just about to cross the contact for that plug wire.
