I subscribe to quite a few lists world-wide, some phbb. type, some Email, Yahoo, etc., all different kinds.
I appreciate the time and effort of those who host, administer, and moderate the lists and boards and will happily use any format that the owner cares to provide.
If I get to where I'm not satisfied, I'll host one myself. So far, no need.
