Actually, many people told me it was normal my drum brakes would not stop well
when I mentioned my braking capacities - that it was a critisizim of the bike
(too heavy for its brakes) when it came out. So I thought it was normal and
just was got used to keeping my distances and slowing down well ahead of
traffic lights.
However, this summer I was riding with another eldo and he did an emergency
stop. He was ahead of me - good distance - we were going around 45 mph. I was
not able to stop, a car was behind and there was an obstruction on the right.
I managed to squeeze by on the left. My bike should have braked at least as
well as the other Eldorado.

Any idea what your friend is doing that might be different than what Elisabeth has already tried? As I have mentioned before, Vintage Brake relined my brakes with riveted Ferodo 2520 (front) and VB3000 (rear). I turned the shoes down to match the drum diameters (as instructed), and since they've bedded in (after about 100 miles)I've had brakes that come pretty close to disc brake performance. The only weak link seems to be the replacement brake cable that I picked up tends to stretch a bit so I am looking for one of the heavier original ones.
