Not sure if it applies here, but on my Tonti frame tach drive cable there is
a split compresion fitting on the end of the cable housing. The guys at MG
refer to it as an "olive". When tightening the cable nut onto the brass
fiting on the engine, the olive is compressed and squeezes the housing,
preventing it from coming out. After removing the cable from the trans,
slide the nut up & pry the olive open slightly with a screwdriver, just
enough to slide it off the housing; then the nut will slide off & the cable
can be removed from the sidecover.
