Did you try screw the cap into the tube before putting the damper in. Might
be hanging up on the damper. It should have a slot that the damper fits
into.

 that is the part. I bought a set of new dampers and seals, and now I can
not get the caps back on. They screw down 1/2 way and lock up. The
threads do not look to bad so I do not know that the problem is. I need
some new ones anyway. It looks like the PO used a chisel and hammer to
remove and install them. I have a 74 Eldo parts book (even has a break
down for amal carbs) it does not have a break down for a disc or 4LS
front end.
