John,
I went out to the garage to see how out-of-round the front wheel is.
I jacked up the front until the point of largest radius just touched the
floor. The result is that I found that the wheel is out-of-round by 1/8"
or less. I am not sure whether this is due to the tire or the rim, but I
do recall that when I rebuilt the wheels I was careful to check this,
however the tire is evenly mounted so the rim may be slightly out. I
will rechack the balance of the rear wheel, but I think it is probably
OK because I had it balanced at the same time I had the front balanced.
My question now is this: would an out-of-round condition of 1/8" be
enough to cause this problem?
Again, all comments are appreciated.

I had exactly the same problem on the Ambo I recently put back
together. I had put the same tires back on the bike that I got with it
(Avons) since they had so much tread on them. As it turned out, the
front tire wasn't really round and had about 1/8-1/4" runout. I put some

Dunlop K-70s on it because I like the old tread pattern, problem solved.

$55ea from Tires Unlimited, best deal.
You might also check the balance on the rear tire. I recently fixed
the front end bounce on my wife's '40 Sport Scout Indian by balancing
the rear wheel.
Let us know what it turns out to be.

I have another problem looking for a solution from the list. Since
getting my Eldo on the road, I have noticed that at slow speeds (below
about 30 mph), the front end of the bike moves up and down at roughly
the same frequency as the wheel rotation. It wasn't really bad, so I
left it alone, but today I took the front wheel off and took it to a
local motorcycle dealer to have the wheel balanced. When I picked it
up, I was told that the wheel was perfectly balanced and did not
require balancing.
The mechanics at the shop suggested that I might have problems in
the steering head bearings, or that the steering head was loose, but I
am looking for your opinion(s). When I rebuilt the bike, the steering
head bearings were not replaced since they looked pretty good, and I
am sure that there is no play in the steering head.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Brian
