Grease the gasket. The crumbly stuff could be oil sludge or particles
of the rubber timing chain tensioner (if yours has a chain).

Also, had some interesting little specs of gravely stuff in the bottom
of the pan that you could crumble with your thumb nail... what is it?
I've owned the bike 2 years, but I'm afraid this is the first time I've
had the pan off.. any comments appreciated... Bill
