Ian-
we found an upgraded [i.e. flat bearing] at harpers, no reaming of the
case required. Steve told rick [mgcycle] about it, and he was gonna call
alice about the supplier, soooooo- maybe mg has them now? if not- harpers
sure does! [looks exactly like the 5-speed version, only smaller.
see ya, somewhere!

Hey All,

Ed and I tore into his Ambo engine yesterday. He had heard some things that
did not sound right...not to mention it was leaking from front and back 35
year old seals.

Discovered was that one of the clutch plates had become unriveted from the
backing. The bike still operated smoothly but the plate was disintegrating.
Don't you love it when you find these things out at home rather than 1500
miles from home? :-)

Also, as he disassembled...he noticed the 4 speed throw out bearing was
toast. The bearings were ok but the cage had disintegrated.

Questions: Anyone have a 4 speed throw out bearing to sell? The other
alternative is to rebore the opening and put the 5 speed needle bearing type
in there. Can someone confirm that he needs to bore the opening to 22mm.

Predicting that he would need to rebore we pulled the back end from the 4
speed. The insides were perfect. Amazing after 35 years! One thing we
noticed was a piece of metal at the top of the tranny....identified as an
"cup - oil pick up (12 20 20 00) Tavola 9 - #33". Anyone know why that was
put in there? It isn't in the 5 speeds and we were speculating.

Working on these Loops is so much fun...So easy.

...We'll keep you posted...Ian
