Bill,
Carrying a spare cable is a whole lot cheaper than installing an hydraulic clutch, not to mention that it's something more complex to fail. I once rode with some friends to West Va. rally. Sunday morning, loading up to ride home, One of the guys pulled the hydraulic clutch on his Ducati & it went right to the bar. Had it been a cable clutch, we could have rigged something (even on a Duc.), but nothing could be done W/the hydraulics & he had to "crash box" shift his bike 420 miles home to Lynchburg VA.
I learned the lesson about spare cables by breaking the clutch cable on my old Ambo about 50 miles from home. I switched the front brake cable to the clutch. The ride home was "exciting" (right hand clutch & no front brake) but hey, I got home without having to call for help.
