If the choke seal is bad that would allow fuel to be sucked up and into the
motor.

Thanks Patrick-

I did make sure the choke cables have freeplay when closed, but I did
not check the seals- will do so tonight- but just out of curiousity- if
the seals were bad, wouldn't that make the mixture more lean as more air
would be allowed?

Sure you have LOOSE play in the choke cables when turned off?

Did you pull the chokes from their bores, turn them over, and see what
the rubber sealing base looks like?
