I agree with most, could be rod bearings.
Could also be some chrome flakes made thier way to the rockers and ate away
at the copper bushings there. Easy to check, make sure the cyl is at TDC,
then back off adjusters, then remove the bolt and spindle, look inside the
bores of the rockers. I had little "chewed" marks that ran from the oil
supply hole and down the bores a short distance.
I know for a fact that I had a lot of chrome flakes in my lubrication
system because ym big-end rod bearings were really chewed up, the sludge
trap was FULL of it, and the main bearings had a tiny bit of embedded
material. One rod journal of the crank looked a little "wavy" but miked out
to within normal specs when I cleaned it up (thankfully!).
I wonder if you could have put the rocker assemblies in with springs on
wrong side?
I think if the "new" cyl you used lost chrome you had better pull the rod
ends at least and look for bright, shiny flakes embedded in the bearing
material.
