Sorry to have cause any confusion- John U. put your bike back together!

I'm using a piece of 1 1/2 pvc, 1/2 inch long. PVC pipe has an internal
diameter of 1 1/2 of course. A coupling, like John said he used, is
larger since it has to fit around the outside of pvc. 1 1/2 pipe sits
on the castellated nut- one could machine a groove in it (it looks to be
just a wee bit small), but that might weaken the pvc. A coupling is
easily wide enough to sit outside the nut. However, the pipe matches
the diameter of the spring, so I'm inclined to go with a piece of pipe
rather than a coupling. Top or bottom, since this is a linear
compression system, it shouldn't matter. All that said, I think Charlie
has come up with the most elegant solution.
I'm puttin' mine on top, cause I'm a top kind of guy.
I'll take some pictures and post them up this weekend if you want, but
it's not very exciting.

Hi Ray,
I used 1 1/2" PVC pipe plugs instead of the pipe. The local Lowe's
didn't want to sell me any short pieces and the plugs were a little bit
beefier (thicker wall). Of course I had to chuck them up in the lathe
and cut the closed end off - I made mine 1" long. Hope to try the forks
(along with the rest of the bike) out soon! Cheers,
