My local starter/alt.shop had no trouble getting parts for the bosch starter
but could not get parts for a marelli unit I wanted rebuilt.

There are some bosch starters on Ebay now. What is the starter doing ? It may just be a solenoid. Any good starter / Alt repair shop should be able to rebuild it, as long as the noise cone and bendix are ok.
